The year 2010 has exploded with numerous adventures from people all over the island. I have to say hiking in Hawai'i is growing at an exponential rate. A factor for that is the ever increasing quantity of information regarding to hikes. From the hiking trails to the internet, more people are appearing out of no where and posting their articles. What intrigues me the most are the ones with documentations of the less documented and "off the beaten path" hikes, such as Piliwale Ridge, Bear Claw Ridge, and True Manamana. Advents in modern technology such as iPhones, GPS, GoPro Hero HD cameras, and even hiking gear have really helped mankind to venture farther away from civilization, not just in Hawai'i, but all over the world. Ever since the dawn of YouTube and Vimeo, people can now watch phenominal high definition footage that before can only be seen by the hiker himself...... from the comforts of their living room. Akin to the fictional Star Trek universe (where people also utilize futuristic technology to explore the unknown), hikers have truly gone where no hiker has gone before... at least since the 50s up to the 80s, where the lack of state of the art technology have severely limited documentation of hikes and climbs. It won't be long before videos and perhaps photographs will show them in 3D, which is the current new trend in the science of visual technology. I'll take this ridge and shove it in your face!
Over the past months, I've gotten the opportunity to meet numerous fool hardy hardcore hikers and together we explored and documented some of the most remote locations on Oahu and other islands. I've learned and grown from my past experiences that I've encountered, both good.... and the bad, to help become who I am today. Without wise people from the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club and other people from the Hawaii hiking community, along with modern technology, I would not been able to document these hikes like the way I do. Mahalo nui loa to all of you and congratulations to all of your accomplishments that you have done during this one crazy year of 2010 and beforehand!
